Well, I completed my first assignment for the Big Picture Scrapbooking - Design Your Life 2010 class that I am taking and I wasn't thrilled with how it came out. I decided to be the first brave soul to post to the "constructive criticism" forum for the class to see if I could get some suggestions as to what to do differently. There are close to 700 people taking this class, so I very quickly got some great ideas. I'm quite pleased with the improvement! Here is my before and after:

the second is better - and super cute! :) It would be fun if you posted what suggestions led you to the "after" layout - I think we could all learn from that.
ReplyDeleteFor those of you not taking Cathy's class along with me - here are the highlights of the comments that led me to make the changes. Remember, this was posted on a constructive criticism board, so I was asking for the suggestions! :-)
ReplyDelete“ The arrows are a bit distracting--I noticed them before anything else on the page--and I don't know that they're even necessary. The position of your text "before" and "after" makes that really clear.”
“How about changing the colour of the journalling block? I find it a bit too bright - it
“How about a more neutral coloured backgound to tone with the wooden furniture in the large photo? And also the colour of his hair?”
“I find it a bit distracting, that the journaling is on the right hand side and there's that empty space on the left. As this week is about symmetry: I would make the text stretch over the whole journaling box - with the same amount of space on the left and on the right, in between the "Before" and "After".”
“The only thing I might add--unless someone else said and I missed it--is that the original drop shadows look a little, well, aggressive.”
wow - great comments. It sounds like this class is really helpful - may have to take it someday. Thanks for sharing.
